Vineyard Notes
Three of our five estate vineyard locations contributed to this blend. The Viognier and Petite Sirah portions came from the south side of Edna Ranch East on a small knoll above one of our best Chardonnay blocks. This block grows on an unusual rootstock, Riperia Gloire, that makes for very intense flavors. The Grenache and a portion of the Syrah came from the Salaal vineyard, which reliably produces some of our best Syrah. The balance of the Syrah came from Edna Ranch West, which lies on a unique sandy hillside that also grows very fine Pinot and Chardonnay.
Winemaking Notes
The most unusual part of this wine’s upbringing is that we let members of our wine club blend it. We select a range of interesting lots, where 30-40 of our club members put together the final blend. This is a lot of fun and has resulted in some unusual and delicious wines such as this non vintage Rhone style blend. The grapes are hand harvested and use traditional winemaking methods. Fermented in small open topped tanks and aged in barrels, mostly used and mostly French. The combination of two vintages, 2006 and 2007, have made a uniquely delicious wine.

Tasting Notes
It is unusual, but by no means unprecedented, to blend two vintages. I remember a Spring Mountain Cabernet quite fondly that was an equal mix of the ’68 and ’69 vintages. I’m not sure I would have done this without the wine club’s participation, but I’m very happy with the result. The wine is deeply hued, almost black in color. It is highly perfumed with floral, fruit and spice notes. The flavors are layered with and almost citrus-like fruit. The tannins are fine and balanced.
