“1772” 2006 Tolosa Select Chardonnay
Varietal Composition: 100% Chardonnay
Appellation: Edna Valley AVA
Production: 250 cases
Vineyard Information
The blocks selected for this wine are our very best, 589 and 1213. Year in and year out they yield small quantities of reserve level fruit. The late ripening of the 2006 vintage was beneficial to Chardonnay. It kept the levels of flavor high while not coloring the fruit very much. A small amount of noble rot occurred which adds a layer of complexity not found in most years. We hand harvest this fruit at night to preserve the maximum amount of freshness and quality.
Winemaking & Cellar Information
Besides the very best fruit, in order to make reserve level Chardonnay you need excellent barrels and the appropriate technique. In all years this consists of gentle low yield pressing, slow barrel fermentation, lees stirring, and most importantly barrel selection. This barrel selection is most severe in our 1772 wines as they express the best the vintage has given us. In this year we used 100% malolactic which is unusual for us. The wines needed more softening than normal and so we modified our recipe to suit the year.

Winemaker Tasting Notes
This is an altogether sumptuous and voluptuous Chardonnay. The aromas are astoundingly complex. They lead off with a toasty buttery note, but the floral and fruity notes chime in immediately to support the barrel flavor. The textures in the mouth are particularly well balanced in a full soft style. They are velvety is the only way to describe them.
