2006 "Lily Gil" Pinot Noir
Varietal Composition:
100% Edna Ranch Pinot Noir
Appellation: Edna Valley
Block Select Pinot Noirs
These block select wines are meant to represent a broad array of the styles that are possible from the many sites, soils, and clones of our Edna Ranch estate vineyard. This block is often the earliest picked and makes a delicate perfumed wine.
Vineyard Information
This small block at the very top of Edna Ranch east has a unique reddish soil of volcanic origin. Like most of the Pinot on this side of the ranch the yield is low. The clone is Pommard which normally makes bigger chunkier Pinots, but in this case the location trumps the clone and every year a complex and feminine wine is produced.
Winemaking & Cellar Information
The best vineyard sites, such as these chosen for this single block series, require only a simple classical technique to bring out their best. You might say that the winemaking has already taken place in the vineyard. We hand make these wines in small tanks, drain them to barrel and then barrel select from the best.
Tasting Notes
It has long been observed that you can’t have both great color and great perfume in the same Pinot. This wine supports that idea. Medium in color it is, but also large in flavor. The aroma is of strawberries, violet, rosemary and almonds. The palate is soft and smooth even at a year past bottling. It will likely be best in its youth, the first three to five years past vintage. -Winemaker, Larry Brooks.
