A Unique “1772” Selection
Our “1772” Pinot Noir is a carefully crafted wine, blended from only the very best lots.
Our winemakers reviewed each barrel lot for the purpose of isolating individual barrels,
effectively selecting what we believe to be the finest regional representation of Pinot Noir
for the vintage. These select barrels were then assembled to create an extraordinary
offering of outstanding quality. This vintage is especially unique, as it came from one
exceptional Edna Ranch site, block 593, (Pommard clone). We felt it was the most fully
balanced wine in every sense. The end result, we believe, is possibly our finest Pinot Noir
offering to date.
Winemaking & Cellar Information
We hand-harvested 3.9 tons of gorgeous clusters into half-ton bins, then quickly
transported to the nearby winery. Following a gentle destemming, the resulting “must”
was transferred into an open-top tank and underwent a 36 hour cold-soak phase, at
50°F, to develop the fruit character. The fermenter was then inoculated with natural
wine yeast and subsequently punched-down daily, according to the rate of fermentation.
When dry, the “marc” (skins and seeds remaining following wine draw-off ), was
transferred to our small lot basket press to ensure gentle handling during this critical
extraction phase. Following 24-hour settling, the young wine was transferred to 10
French oak barrels, 3 new, (coopers Rousseau, de Mercurey, and Remond), where it
remained until the September 2004 bottling.
