We have several answers for this varietal on our Edna Ranch Vineyard. Site and clonal diversity are the most important. With ten sites within four of our five vineyard locations we have a wide range of soil temperature and aspect to choose from. A mix of French and California heritage clones and plantings of blenders such as Grenache and Viognier help us as well. Stringent control of crop levels and the patience to wait for true ripeness are the other key ingredients. Winemaking/Vineyard Information: The “1772” Syrah takes patience in the cellar as well. We wait an average of seven months from harvesting before selecting the best barrels. For the 2005 “1772” Syrah only ten barrels were chosen for the final blend. After blending the barrels together they spent an additional ten months in one year-old French cooperage to soften and enrich the mid palate. Analytical Information Alcohol: 14.4% T.A.: 5.70 g/L pH: 3.67 Brix at Harvest: 24.2-25.6 Tasting Notes This deeply colored gem opens with smoky notes underlain with a complex and seamless perfume, which has notes of blackberry bramble, cocoa, and lavender. On the palate the integrity introduced by the aroma expresses itself in medium structure with dynamic tannins, sweet fruit and vanilla notes. Very high levels of vinosity are the sure hallmark of a reserve wine, this is only achieved by the most stringent lot and barrel selection, which makes our “1772” series.
