2006 "Beyond" Pinot Noir
Varietal Composition:
100% Edna Ranch Pinot Noir
Appellation: Edna Valley
Block Select Pinot Noirs
These block select wines are meant to represent a broad array of the styles that are possible from the many sites, soils, and clones of our Edna Ranch estate vineyard. This block is often the earliest picked and makes a delicate perfumed wine.
Vineyard Information
This wine was made from block 597 on the eastern slopes of Edna Ranch. It is the lowest yielding block of Pinot on the estate. The soils are a clay loam with gravel over serpentine subsoil. The clone, 2A, does very well in our area. This is one of the few blocks where we can use whole cluster fermentation. It tends to ripen on the late side of the Pinot window.
Winemaking & Cellar Information
We use a fairly “classic” technique with Pinot Noir. The wine is fermented in open top tanks, which allows hands on extraction. Only free run wine is bottled for this series. All wines are barrel selected to optimize the quality and flavors.
Tasting Notes
This is a ripe dark wine. The initial impression is of spice, black cherry, and smoke. There are hints of plum and cedar as well. The palate is full with the sweetness of the fruit harmonizing with the tannins. It has an exceptionally long finish. - Winemaker, Larry Brooks
